About

The Ireland Walking Guide is the best and most user-friendly Irish walking and hiking information website. If you are planning a day walk, a weekend of walking, a holiday or vacation in Ireland, make us the first stop for all your on-foot Irish adventures.

Our ongoing and long-term mission is to present The Ireland Walking Guide website as the very best independent all-Ireland walking information resource at absolutely no cost to our website visitors. We have no need to pursue government or other third-party funding or support to achieve this, nor do we rely on fee-based memberships or subscriptions. Our initiatives are all free to participants and we do not sell any own-branded merchandise. In short, we generate no financial income from the Irish walking community or from any other external funders. All website development and running costs are taken care of in-house by Donard Media.

We will never ever ask you to donate money to support The Ireland Walking Guide website's ongoing development or to help cover its running costs. We are not a charity. In fact, we would much prefer it if you donate your hard-earned cash to a registered charity of your own choice. The closest thing to advertising that you will ever see on this website is limited to our Community section. This is a dedicated directory where walking clubs, guides, events and certain businesses can get listed for free.

The Ireland Walking Guide is a long-term not-for-profit website project with a long-term development plan to match. We are in this purely for the love of walking in Ireland, to provide a free resource for recreational walkers, and to host a free listings platform for the Irish walking community. We are keen to maintain The Ireland Walking Guide's position as the No.1 outward-facing independent all-Ireland walking information website. For this reason, we do not enter into any exclusive affiliations or alliances with inward-facing websites or organisations regardless of how popular or "official" they are or how we might benefit from such an arrangement. Our dedication to providing high-quality information across the full spectrum of recreational walking at an all-Ireland level, plus our unrivalled selection of meaningful initiatives, makes us truly unique among Ireland's walking information websites and organisations (including "official" government-funded ones). This is something we will never compromise on. This is what makes us your first-stop Irish walking resource.

The Ireland Walking Guide is not a crowd-sourced project. We do all the hard work behind the scenes to bring you the very best online all-Ireland walking information resource. The last thing we want to do is distract you from your walking activities and living your lives to the full. Time is the most precious commodity in today's busy world, so it would be inappropriate of us to ask you to help build our website. The development of the website does not require any community input, although we would love to showcase your on-location photos within our content (fully credited of course).

The Ireland Walking Guide is designed entirely around you. The website is very easy to navigate so you can find what you need as quickly as possible in as few clicks as possible. Although this is likely to reduce the number of pages you visit in each session, we hope it will help reduce the amount of time you spend looking at screens each day. Minimising our daily screen time is important for our mental health and well-being and ultimately frees up time for physical activity. While other websites are primarily interested in their traffic statistics and search engine rankings, we are more interested in saving you time and keeping you healthy.

The Ireland Walking Guide is a privately-funded non-commercial project originally created by hillwalker and map enthusiast Kieron Gribbon in 2012. The website is now part of Donard Media's expanding portfolio of online projects.

Support us (at no cost)

Our website is a 100% free resource for all to view without having to pay any subscription fees or being asked for donations. We cover all the costs of running and maintaining the website ourselves on a voluntary basis. And we do all of this purely for our love of walking in Ireland. The long-term development strategy for The Ireland Walking Guide website will continue to be implemented over the coming years and for as long as it takes until our strategic goals are achieved. In the meantime, here are some zero-cost, zero-time ways in which you can support the ongoing development of The Ireland Walking Guide and its growing family of independent Irish information websites.

Walking initiatives

We have developed the widest possible selection of meaningful initiatives to promote recreational walking in Ireland. These are delivered across The Ireland Walking Guide and High Point Ireland websites and range from monthly walking themes right through to the official All-Ireland Hillwalking Championships. We aim to deliver a consistent programme of initiatives every year on a recurring basis rather than a series of standalone one-off campaigns. Our "predictable" approach to participation initiatives means walkers always know what's coming up and have ample time to plan ahead. But why should you take part? Click here to find out...
