Frequently asked questions

Being Ireland's first-stop walking information website, we tend to receive a large quantity of walk-related enquiry emails in our inbox each week. Over the years, we have responded to thousands of emails. Many of these have asked us the same questions, and our answers have often directed the enquirer to the appropriate page(s) on our website. Please note that we will not be responding to future enquiries which ask questions already answered on this page, so please check before contacting us.

Where to walk

"I will be visiting [location] during [month] and would like to explore the area on foot while I'm there. Can you recommend some places to walk?"

We list a wide variety of places to walk in Ireland on our website. These include woodland, parkland, coastal and upland locations as well as the National Waymarked Trails. These can all be found in our “Where to walk” section. We have also grouped walking locations by type and by county for your convenience and marked them on handy interactive maps to help you find them.

Walking clubs

"I would like to join a walking club. Can you recommend one for me?"

We can only recommend the clubs with profile pages on our website. These can be found here.

"I would like to join your walking club. Are you accepting new members, and how do I join?"

The Ireland Walking Guide is an online information resource. We are not a walking club. Please check here to search for clubs near you.

"Our club is not listed on your website. How can we get it added?"

Sorry we missed it. Please complete and submit a Club Joining Form to set up a profile page and initiate a 2-way link exchange arrangement with us. This can be accessed here. If your club does not have a website, it can add a link on its Facebook page directing its viewers to its club profile page in our clubs section. Email us first so we can set up a basic profile page for your club.

"Our walking group is not insured. Can we get it listed on your website?"

Unfortunately not. We only list insured walking clubs on our website.

"Our club is listed on your website, but the link on its profile page goes to your 'Awaiting club details' page. Could you update the link so people will be directed to our club’s website please?"

We would be very happy to direct people to your club's website as part of a 2-way link exchange arrangement. To initiate this, please add a link from your club's website to the relevant county page(s) on our website. Next, you must complete and submit our online Club Joining Form. This can be accessed here. If your club does not have a website, it can add a link on its Facebook page directing its viewers to its club profile page in our clubs section.

"Our club will be hosting an open-invitation walking event in the near future. Can you help us to promote it?"

If your club has a completed profile page on our website and is currently participating in a 2-way link exchange arrangement with us, we would be very happy to help promote any recurring open-invitation walking events it hosts. Please tell us about your event by completing and submitting an Event Form. This can be accessed here. If your club has not yet completed its profile page on our website, it must submit a Club Joining Form and initiate a 2-way link exchange arrangement with us first. Further details on this can be found here.

"Myself and a few friends are thinking about setting up a new walking club. Could you provide any advice on this?"

Unfortunately we are not in a position to advise on any aspect of this. If your club is going to be based in the Republic of Ireland, you should contact Mountaineering Ireland. If it is going to be based in Northern Ireland, you should contact the Ulster Federation of Rambling Clubs.

Walking events

"I will be visiting [location] during [month] and would like to explore the area on foot while I'm there. Can you recommend a walking event I could attend?"

We can only recommend the recurring open-invitation walking events which are listed on our website. These can be found here.

"We will be hosting an open-invitation walking event in the near future. Can you help us to promote it by listing it on your website, and how much will this cost?"

If your organisation is currently participating in a 2-way link exchange arrangement with us, we would be very happy to help promote any recurring open-invitation walking events it hosts. There is no cost involved. Please tell us about your event by completing and submitting an Event Form. This can be accessed here. To add a walking event, your organisation must first be listed on the relevant page of our 'Community' section.

"I will be visiting [location] during [month] and would like to explore the area on foot while I'm there. Can you recommend a local walking guide who leads walks in the area?"

We can only recommend the walking guide services which are listed on our website. These can be found here.

"I am a walking guide. How can I get listed on your website?"

Please complete and submit a Guide Joining Form to set up a 2-way link exchange arrangement with us. This can be accessed here.

Accommodation for walkers

"I will be visiting [location] during [month] and would like to explore the area on foot while I'm there. I have looked at the county page on your website but cannot see any walker-friendly accommodation listed there. Can you recommend some places to stay in the area?"

We can only add walker-friendly accommodation to county pages when a provider initiates a 2-way link exchange arrangement with us and makes a formal request to us to get their property listed. We also provide a county-based accommodation search facility on The Ireland Travel Guide website. This uses Booking.com. If you access their platform via a link from our websites and go on to place a booking there, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you.

"I am an accommodation provider who welcomes walkers and can advise them of local places to walk. Can you list my property on your website and how much would this cost?"

We would be very happy to feature your property. There would be no cost involved. Please complete and submit an Accommodation Link Exchange Form to set up a 2-way link exchange arrangement with us. This can be accessed here.

Walking holidays

"I am planning a walking holiday in [location] during [month]. I intend to walk [distance] each day. Could you send me an itinerary of walks and accommodation for the duration of my holiday?"

Unfortunately we do not have the resources to provide a personalised holiday planning service. To help you plan your walking holiday, we have set up some very useful information on our website. The best place to start would be our 'Walking holidays in Ireland' page.

FAQs - Frequently asked questions - The Ireland Walking Guide

Support us (at no cost)

Our website is a 100% free resource for all to view without having to pay any subscription fees or being asked for donations. We cover all the costs of running and maintaining the website ourselves on a voluntary basis. And we do all of this purely for our love of walking in Ireland. The long-term development strategy for The Ireland Walking Guide website will continue to be implemented over the coming years and for as long as it takes until our strategic goals are achieved. In the meantime, here are some zero-cost, zero-time ways in which you can support the ongoing development of The Ireland Walking Guide and its growing family of independent Irish information websites.

Walking initiatives

We have developed the widest possible selection of meaningful initiatives to promote recreational walking in Ireland. These are delivered across The Ireland Walking Guide and High Point Ireland websites and range from monthly walking themes right through to the official All-Ireland Hillwalking Championships. We aim to deliver a consistent programme of initiatives every year on a recurring basis rather than a series of standalone one-off campaigns. Our "predictable" approach to participation initiatives means walkers always know what's coming up and have ample time to plan ahead. But why should you take part? Click here to find out...
