Irish hill lists

A complete guide to summit lists and High Point lists for Ireland

Ireland has one of the most extensive selections of published summit lists and High Point lists in the world. This section gives the most comprehensive and impartial overview of the current All-Ireland, provincial and local hill listings. Many of these are original lists which have resulted from months or even years of painstaking map-based research carried out by their respective compilers. Some are derived lists which have been quickly compiled by duplicating, extracting, merging or overlapping content from earlier published lists without having undertaken any original research at all. We have carefully assessed all of Ireland's main hill lists and categorised each as being either "Original" or "Derived". We have also grouped a small number of lists in an "Other" category where some of the listed summits fall short of international standards, or if a list has been tainted in some way.

A published hill list can serve up to three primary functions:

  • It can facilitate the presentation of topographical data (usually for summits and High Points) based on its respective criteria.
  • It can provide a challenge to hillwalkers where the objective is to 'complete' the list by visiting all of its locations.
  • If designated by a national governing body for Sport Hillwalking, it can be the central component of an official national-level Sport Hillwalking competition. In Ireland, this particular designation has been granted by High Point Ireland to the Irish Championship Summits, the Irish Hewitts and Ireland's Major Geographical High Points which form the basis of the All-Ireland Hillwalking Championships, the Irish Mountaineer of the Year competition and the Irish Highpointeer of the Year competition respectively.

The introduction of Sport Hillwalking in Ireland in 2016 gave the traditional hill list a whole new purpose. The annual Sport Hillwalking competitions in Ireland are now based on the list of Irish Sport Hillwalking locations which comprises every mountain summit, notable hill summit and Major Geographical High Point in Ireland. The objective in these official national-level competitions is not to complete their respective list in full, but to earn points from each individual location visited during the course of a competition season.

Our website is a 100% free resource for all to view without having to pay any subscription fees or being asked for donations. We cover all the costs of running and maintaining the website ourselves on a voluntary basis. And we do all of this purely for our love of walking in Ireland. The long-term development strategy for The Ireland Walking Guide website will continue to be implemented over the coming years and for as long as it takes until our strategic goals are achieved. In the meantime, here are some zero-cost, zero-time ways in which you can support the ongoing development of The Ireland Walking Guide and its growing family of independent Irish information websites.

Walking initiatives

We have developed the widest possible selection of meaningful initiatives to promote recreational walking in Ireland. These are delivered across The Ireland Walking Guide and High Point Ireland websites and range from monthly walking themes right through to the official All-Ireland Hillwalking Championships. We aim to deliver a consistent programme of initiatives every year on a recurring basis rather than a series of standalone one-off campaigns. Our "predictable" approach to participation initiatives means walkers always know what's coming up and have ample time to plan ahead. But why should you take part? Click here to find out...
