Other Irish hill lists

Vandeleur-Lynams

This original list has a prominence criteria of just 50ft / 15m resulting in several of its locations having a prominence of less than 30m. As these fall below the UIAA standard for separate summits (i.e. 30m prominence) the Vandeleur-Lynams cannot be formally included in the list of Irish hill lists. As of 31st December 2023, the Vandeleur-Lynam list comprised 275 locations. These include all 209 proper Irish mountain summits (Hewitts) and 14 hill summits along with 52 lesser tops which do not qualify as separate summits. We will not be applying any future updates to the Vandeleur-Lynam list.

  • The original 2,000ft Vandeleur-Lynam list was 100% based on original research
  • The original list was 0% derived from other lists
  • The original list was compiled by CRP Vandeleur and Joss Lynam
  • The original was amended by Joss Lynam and Simon Stewart in the early 2000s to create a new version which could compete with the better-known Irish Hewitts and Dillons lists. In order to compete with these other established mountain lists, the minimum elevation and prominence thresholds of Vandeleur-Lynams were decreased to 600m and 15m respectively.
  • As a result of expanding the list by lowering the elevation and prominence thresholds, 24% of the current Vandeleur-Lynams do not qualify as proper mountain summits and 18.91% do not even qualify as any kind of separate summit. For this reason, the Vandeleur-Lynams can no longer be described as a mountain list or as a summit list.
  • With a score of 16.342 points, this list is in 8th position on the All-Ireland hill list rankings.

The Dillons

This original list has no set prominence criteria resulting in several of its locations having a prominence of less than 30m. As these fall below the UIAA standard for separate summits (i.e. 30m prominence) the Dillons cannot be formally included in the list of original Irish hill lists. As of 31st December 2023, the Dillon list comprised 212 locations. These include 200 of the 209 proper Irish mountain summits (Hewitts) and 12 lesser tops which do not qualify as separate summits. We will not be applying any future updates to the Dillon list.

  • 100% based on original research
  • 0% derived from other lists
  • Compiled by Paddy Dillon.
  • Based on prominence criteria recommended by the UIAA, 5.66% of the current Dillons do not qualify as separate summits. For this reason, the Dillons can no longer be described as a mountain list or as a summit list.
  • With a score of 13.674 points, this list is in 10th position on the All-Ireland hill list rankings.

MountainViews Area High Points

  • 0% based on original research
  • 100% derived from other lists
  • Compiled by MountainViews (announced in January 2025).
  • The primary motivation for creating this list was to oust and replace the original Ireland's Range High Points list.
  • With a score of -1 point, this list is in joint bottom position on the All-Ireland hill list rankings.

Support us (at no cost)

Our website is a 100% free resource for all to view without having to pay any subscription fees or being asked for donations. We cover all the costs of running and maintaining the website ourselves on a voluntary basis. And we do all of this purely for our love of walking in Ireland. The long-term development strategy for The Ireland Walking Guide website will continue to be implemented over the coming years and for as long as it takes until our strategic goals are achieved. In the meantime, here are some zero-cost, zero-time ways in which you can support the ongoing development of The Ireland Walking Guide and its growing family of independent Irish information websites.

Walking initiatives

We have developed the widest possible selection of meaningful initiatives to promote recreational walking in Ireland. These are delivered across The Ireland Walking Guide and High Point Ireland websites and range from monthly walking themes right through to the official All-Ireland Hillwalking Championships. We aim to deliver a consistent programme of initiatives every year on a recurring basis rather than a series of standalone one-off campaigns. Our "predictable" approach to participation initiatives means walkers always know what's coming up and have ample time to plan ahead. But why should you take part? Click here to find out...
