The All-Ireland Mountain Challenge

Challenge yourself to visit all 209 mountain summits in Ireland. On this page you will find information about All-Ireland Mountain Challenge including its list of locations and links to guide books, maps and local facilities. You will also find details about how to use this challenge to boost your score in the All-Ireland Hillwalking Championships.

This is a flexible hillwalking challenge to be undertaken independently. It is not a set-date, mass-start event. Each individual participant is free to choose their own start / finish dates and duration period.

The summits


​The All-Ireland Mountain Challenge requires participants to visit 209 Irish mountain summits. These are marked on the map below. Click on a marker for more details. Route choice is entirely up to the participant, therefore we have not included any route suggestions on the map. Route planning is part of this challenge.

Challenge information


The All-Ireland Mountain Challenge is one of our 24 anytime Irish mountain challenges. Completers of this challenge can claim a Certificate of Completion and score points in the All-Ireland Hillwalking Championships and Irish Mountaineer of the Year competition.

Hillwalkers who register for the year-long version of this challenge on Peakhunter and visit all of the mountain summits listed above between 1st January and 31st December can request an "annual" Certificate of Completion for that year. If they manage this feat within a Sport Hillwalking season, it would boost their competition scores by 1,918 competition points. Please note that we do not expect anyone to achieve this particular hillwalking feat within a single 4-month competition season​.

Individuals who do not complete the challenge within the Sport Hillwalking season can still earn competition points for each logged mountain summit, provided they register for the relevant month-long round(s) of competition on Peakhunter and submit a one-off Sport Hillwalking Entry Form between 1st January and 30th June.

Instructions

  1. Install the Peakhunter app on your smartphone and create a profile (you only need to do this once).
  2. Sign into your Peakhunter account on the smartphone app (if not already signed in).
  3. In the app's settings, download all the Ireland and United Kingdom locations. We recommend that you do this every few months to ensure that you have the most up-to-date set of locations.
  4. Register for this challenge on Peakhunter. An annual version of this challenge will be added to Peakhunter each year. A lifetime version can be made available on request.
  5. Visit all of the mountain summits listed above. These can be visited in any order.
  6. Log each mountain summit visit using the Peakhunter app while present at the location.
  7. To earn the "lifetime" Certificate of Completion, all mountain summits listed above must be visited and logged at any time using the Peakhunter app after 1st January 2011.
  8. To earn the "annual" Certificate of Completion, all mountain summits listed above must be visited and logged on the Peakhunter app during a single year (1st January to 31st December).
  9. To add a mountain summit's points to your All-Ireland Hillwalking Championships (once per round) and / or Irish Mountaineer of the Year (once per season) competition scores, you must submit a Sport Hillwalking Entry Form between 1st January and 30th June, register for the relevant challenge(s) on Peakhunter, and log that summit on the Peakhunter app during the Sport Hillwalking season.
  10. To generate an official score in the All-Ireland Hillwalking Championships, you must register for at least one of the month-long rounds of competition on Peakhunter. We recommend that you register for all four rounds as early as possible to ensure that you maximise your score.

The inclusion of each summit in this challenge is based entirely on it having been officially classified as a mountain. This classification is reserved exclusively for summits higher than 2,000 feet with a topographical prominence of at least 30m (see 'What is an Irish mountain?'). Summits which do not meet these two requirements do not qualify as mountains, even if the word 'mountain' appears in their names. It should not be assumed that access is permitted to any of the mountain summits. The Ireland Walking Guide, High Point Ireland and Donard Media recommend that anyone planning to visit any of the summits as part of this challenge should check for potential access restrictions and to request permission from the relevant landowner(s) in advance.

Register


To earn a Certificate of Completion for the year-long All-Ireland Mountain Challenge, hillwalkers must register for it on the Peakhunter website. Peakhunter is our official logging partner. Please note that a Certificate of Completion for a "lifetime" version of this challenge can also be requested if all locations have been logged on Peakhunter since 1st January 2011. Whichever version(s) you choose, registration is a simple 3-click process starting with the green "Register for the All-Ireland Mountain Challenge" button below. You will need to be signed into the Peakhunter platform to complete the final click of the registration process.

Hillwalkers who log visits to any of the individual mountain summits listed above during the Sport Hillwalking season can add points to their All-Ireland Hillwalking Championships and Irish Mountaineer of the Year competition scores. Hillwalkers wishing to compete in these competitions must register by first submitting a Sport Hillwalking Entry Form. This can be accessed via the green "Register for Irish Sport Hillwalking competitions" button below. Each mountain summit can be counted once per round in the All-Ireland Hillwalking Championships and once per season in the Irish Mountaineer of the Year competition.

These are delivered across The Ireland Walking Guide and High Point Ireland websites and range from monthly walking themes right through to the official All-Ireland Hillwalking Championships. We aim to deliver a consistent programme of initiatives every year on a recurring basis rather than a series of standalone one-off campaigns.
