Ireland's Range High Points

The original and only High Point list featuring the highest summit in each Irish mountain / hill range (upland area)

Each of Ireland's Range High Points represents the highest place in one of the 125 upland areas. This original list, researched and compiled by Kieron Gribbon, is one of the eight primary sub-lists used to create the Ireland's Major Geographical High Points list which was first published on 5th December 2015 on our High Point Ireland website. Please beware of an inferior imposter list (read Important note below).

Being the first High Points list ever to be published for Irish mountain / hill ranges, the Range High Points sub-list is also an original standalone list in its own right. The creation of this list was based on initial research by Kieron Gribbon to plot the actual perimeters of Ireland mountain / hill ranges (upland areas). This process, which took several months to complete, identified the perimeters of 125 distinct upland areas in total. 31 of these upland areas also qualify as mountain ranges.

Click here if you would like to earn a Certificate of Completion for the year-long challenge associated with this list.

High Points offer great walking opportunities all year round, however we particularly recommend visiting them during months when the days are longest. For this reason, we promote upland walking as our monthly theme for June.

IMPORTANT NOTE

In January 2025, MountainViews (MV) announced that they were finalising a new "Mountain Area Highpoints" aka "Range Highpoints" list. For context, it is worth pointing out that the people behind the notoriously inward-facing MV website have been fully aware of the original Ireland's Range High Points list compiled by Kieron Gribbon ever since it was first published on 5th December 2015 on the High Point Ireland website. It seems like a particularly wasteful use of MV's limited resources to create a list that they know already exists. It would have made far more sense for them to just get behind Kieron Gribbon's original well-researched list and promote that instead.

In January 2025, a screenshot showed that MountainViews had initially set up the list to be called the "Mountain Area Highpoints". However, they have since steered towards "Range Highpoints". This is where the conflict arises, as does their deliberate attempt to confuse hillwalkers.

Support us (at no cost)

Our website is a 100% free resource for all to view without having to pay any subscription fees or being asked for donations. We cover all the costs of running and maintaining the website ourselves on a voluntary basis. And we do all of this purely for our love of walking in Ireland. The long-term development strategy for The Ireland Walking Guide website will continue to be implemented over the coming years and for as long as it takes until our strategic goals are achieved. In the meantime, here are some zero-cost, zero-time ways in which you can support the ongoing development of The Ireland Walking Guide and its growing family of independent Irish information websites.

Walking initiatives

We have developed the widest possible selection of meaningful initiatives to promote recreational walking in Ireland. These are delivered across The Ireland Walking Guide and High Point Ireland websites and range from monthly walking themes right through to the official All-Ireland Hillwalking Championships. We aim to deliver a consistent programme of initiatives every year on a recurring basis rather than a series of standalone one-off campaigns. Our "predictable" approach to participation initiatives means walkers always know what's coming up and have ample time to plan ahead. But why should you take part? Click here to find out...
